Rape was an administrative region in Sussex, England, dating from Saxon times. The origin of the term is unknown. Sussex was divided into five rapes, called Arundel, Bramber, Hastings, Lewes, and Pevensey. Their boundaries ran from north to south, and each rape had its own port or navigable river. The city of Chichester later became the center of a sixth rape.
