Reading, Marquess of (1860-1935), Rufus Daniel Isaacs, was a successful British lawyer, politician, and diplomat. Isaacs was born in London on Oct. 10, 1860, and educated at University College in London. Before entering politics, he had a brilliant career as a barrister (lawyer qualified to argue cases in the highest courts). From 1904 to 1913, he served as member of Parliament for Reading, Berkshire. In 1910, he was appointed attorney general, a post he held until 1913. From 1913 to 1921, he served as lord chief justice, the United Kingdom’s second highest judicial official. He was British viceroy of India from 1921 to 1926. He died on Dec. 30, 1935.
