Salford

Salford (pop. 269,923) is a metropolitan district and manufacturing city in northwestern England. Salford lies to the west of the city of Manchester and on the north side of the Manchester Ship Canal. The former dock area, Salford Quays, is now an enterprise zone for new industries and also includes a major arts center called the Lowry. The district of Salford includes the towns of Eccles, Irlam, Swinton, and Worsley. The University of Salford, originally founded as a technical institute in 1896, is one of the largest universities in the United Kingdom.
