Stockton-on-Tees (pop. 196,595) is a town in northern England and a unitary authority, the primary form of local government in the United Kingdom. Sometimes called simply Stockton, it lies on the River Tees. Many of Stockton’s people work in the chemical, engineering, and steel industries. An open-air market held in Stockton began operating in 1310. In 1825, the inventor George Stephenson’s Locomotion No. 1 pulled its first train along the world’s first public railroad, the Stockton and Darlington Railway.
