Sunderland (pop. 274,171) is a district in Tyne and Wear Metropolitan County, England, along the North Sea coast. It includes the port of Sunderland, the seaside resorts of Roker and Seaburn, and the new town (region of rapid development) of Washington.
Sunderland’s port has facilities for containers with all types of cargo. It also serves as a base for the offshore oil industry. The area’s industries include engineering and the manufacture of clothing, glass, and motor vehicles.
