Taylor, Brook (1685-1731), an English mathematician, developed the formula that became the basis of the calculus of finite differences (see Calculus ). This formula, known as Taylor’s theorem, appeared in his Methodus Incrementorum Directa et Inversa (1715). Taylor was born on Aug. 18, 1685, in Edmonton, now part of London. He studied at St. John’s College, Cambridge University. Taylor was secretary of the Royal Society from 1714 to 1718. He died in London on Dec. 29, 1731.
