Telephone, The , is an opera in one act by the Italian-born American composer Gian Carlo Menotti to his own libretto (text). See Menotti, Gian Carlo . It received its first performance in New York City in 1947. The setting is an apartment occupied by Lucy. The time is the present. Ben is about to leave town and visits Lucy with the intention of proposing marriage to her. But every time he tries, her telephone rings. In the end, he finds that the only way to get Lucy’s attention is to go out and call her up himself. She accepts his telephoned proposal.
