Westland is a region on the western coast of the South Island of New Zealand. This region is also called the West Coast. It includes the historic Westland province and the southwestern part of what was once Nelson province. The region is sometimes called the wild West Coast, because of its history of gold rushes and its memories of fabulous wealth and lawless days. To New Zealanders, mention of the West Coast brings visions of rain, bush, mountains, and glaciers.
