Wigan

Wigan (pop. 329,330) is a metropolitan district in the northwest of England centered on the industrial town of Wigan, midway between Liverpool and Manchester. The town stands on the River Douglas and on the Leeds and Liverpool Canal.

Textiles and industrial machinery are important products for the area. Other industries produce processed foods, clothing, paper products, plastics, and building materials.

Wigan received a charter from King Henry III in 1246. Wigan’s most popular tourist attraction is Wigan Pier, a heritage center in restored industrial buildings along the canal. Rugby League football is a major sport in the area.
