William of Wykeham (1324-1404), an Englishman, founded New College at Oxford University in 1380 and later founded Winchester College. Students at Winchester College are known as Wykehamists. Wykeham was born in Wickham, Hampshire. He entered King Edward III’s service in 1347 and became his secretary in 1364. Wykeham became bishop of Winchester and chancellor of England in 1367. John of Gaunt impeached him for misuse of public funds. King Richard II later restored his office. He died on Sept. 27, 1404.
