Bromide, << BROH myd, >> is the name for a number of compounds made with bromine, a dark-red liquid (see Bromine ). Potassium bromide forms white crystals shaped like those of common table salt. It was formerly used to treat certain nervous disorders because of its ability to calm the nerves and ease convulsions. However, large doses of potassium bromide can cause skin rashes and mental disturbances, and it has now been replaced by safer, more effective drugs. Silver bromide is sensitive to light and is used to make photographic paper, photographic plates, and film.
