Agnes Scott College is a women’s liberal arts college in Decatur, Georgia, affiliated with the Presbyterian Church (U.S.A.). Members of the Decatur Presbyterian Church founded the school in 1889 as a girls’ elementary school. George Washington Scott, a Decatur industrial leader, donated land, money, and a building to the school. To acknowledge Scott’s gift, the school’s trustees named the institution in honor of his mother, Agnes Irvine Scott. Within 10 years, the school had grown into an accredited high school. In 1906, it was chartered as Agnes Scott College and awarded its first bachelor’s degrees. In 1907, Agnes Scott became the first accredited college or university in Georgia.
