Alabama State traces its origins to the Lincoln School of Marion. This private school was established in 1867 in Marion, Alabama, to train black teachers. In 1868, the institution became the Lincoln Normal School. The school moved to Montgomery in 1887. It began to award bachelor’s degrees in 1931 and master’s degrees in 1943.
