Bowie, << BOH ee or BOO ee, >> State University is a private, independent institution of higher learning in Bowie, Maryland. It is one of the oldest American colleges or universities to educate black students. It was established in 1865 as the Industrial School for Colored Youth. The institution operated under several names, including Maryland State Teachers College from 1935 to 1963, before becoming Bowie State University. The Bowie State University athletic teams are called the Bulldogs.
