Eastern Kentucky University is a public, state-supported institution of higher learning in Richmond, Kentucky. It was established in 1906 as Eastern Kentucky State Normal School. In 1922, the school became a four-year institution, and its name was expanded to Eastern Kentucky State Normal School and Teachers College. In 1930, the name was shortened to Eastern Kentucky State Teachers College. In 1948, the college was renamed Eastern Kentucky State College. It became Eastern Kentucky University in 1966. The university’s athletic teams are called the Colonels.
