Georgian Court University is a private, church-affiliated institution in Lakewood, New Jersey. The university began in 1908 as a women’s school called Mount St. Mary College and Academy. It was founded by the Sisters of Mercy, a religious order of the Roman Catholic Church. In 1924, the Sisters purchased the estate of railroad owner George Jay Gould and established the present campus there. As part of the purchase agreement, the Sisters maintained the estate name, Georgian Court. The school’s name was changed from Georgian Court College to Georgian Court University in 2004.
The university is divided into three academic divisions. The largest of these divisions is the Women’s Day Division. The Evening Division, which is coeducational, is geared toward the adult or nontraditional learner. It offers most of the majors available in the Day Division. The Graduate School, which is also coeducational, grants master’s degrees. The athletic teams of Georgian Court University are called the Lions.
