Golden Gate University

Golden Gate University is a private, nonprofit university based in San Francisco. The institution began in 1853 as the night school of the San Francisco Young Men’s Christian Association (YMCA). In 1923, administrators sponsored a contest to rename the school, and it became Golden Gate College. The name referred to Golden Gate Avenue, the street address of an early campus building. The institution adopted its present name in 1972. Golden Gate University focuses primarily on providing career-oriented education to working adults.

In addition to its main campus, the university has several West Coast locations that offer degree programs. Other special programs at the university include those offered through the English Language Institute and CyberCampus. The English Language Institute helps international students develop English proficiency to succeed in academic programs and language testing. The university’s CyberCampus allows students from nearly any location to earn certification, bachelor’s degrees, and master’s degrees through an Internet-based curriculum.
