Bristol, University of, is an institution of higher education in Bristol, in the United Kingdom. The University of Bristol was established in 1876 as University College, Bristol. In 1893, Bristol Medical School, founded in 1833, joined University College. The college was the first institution of higher education in the United Kingdom to admit women on a basis of equality with men. The college became the University of Bristol in 1909 when it received a royal charter from Edward VII , allowing it to grant degrees.
The university offers a range of courses at both undergraduate and postgraduate levels, with single and joint honors degree programs available to undergraduates. The university has a strong reputation in science in general and in such fields as civil, electrical, and electronic engineering, and communications.
