Pincay, Laffit, Jr.

Pincay, Laffit, Jr. (1946-…), a Panamanian jockey, set the record for the most horse races won during a career. In December 1999, Pincay broke the previous record of 8,833 winners held by the American jockey Bill Shoemaker. Pincay retired in 2003 with 9,530 winning races. In December 2006, the Canadian-born jockey Russell Baze broke Pincay’s record. Pincay’s career included victories in the Belmont Stakes in 1982, 1983, and 1984, and a victory in the Kentucky Derby in 1984. Pincay’s skill and sportsmanship made him one of the most popular figures in the horse racing world.

Pincay was born on Dec. 29, 1946, in Panama City. He became a professional jockey in 1964 at the age of 17 and rode his first winner that year in Panama. He won his first race in the United States in 1966.
