Montreal Expos were a professional baseball team that played in the National League (NL) East division of Major League Baseball (MLB) from 1969 to 2004. The Expos played their home games at the domed Stade Olympique (Olympic Stadium) in Montreal , Quebec , Canada . After the 2004 season, the team moved to Washington, D.C. , and was renamed the Washington Nationals .
The Expos were the first MLB team based in Canada. They played eight seasons at Stade Parc Jarry (Jarry Park Stadium) before moving into Olympic Stadium, which was built for the 1976 Summer Olympic Games in Montreal. The team never enjoyed much success. Montreal’s only postseason appearance came in 1981, when a player strike shortened the team’s season to just 108 games. The Expos made the playoffs, but lost to the Los Angeles Dodgers in the NL Championship Series. Montreal fielded several competitive teams after that, but never again reached the playoffs. The Expos featured a number of stars who ended up in the National Baseball Hall of Fame , however, including catcher Gary Carter; outfielders Andre Dawson, Vladimir Guerrero, Tim Raines, and Larry Walker; and pitchers Randy Johnson and Pedro MartÃnez .
