Benedictine University is a private institution of higher learning in Lisle, Illinois. The Benedictine monks of Saint Procopius Abbey, a Roman Catholic religious order for men, founded it in 1887 in Chicago. The school was originally a men’s college called Saint Procopius College. It moved to Lisle in 1901 and began to admit women in 1968. The institution was renamed Illinois Benedictine College in 1971 and then Benedictine University in 1996. Benedictine University athletic teams are called the Eagles.
