Holy Names University is a private institution of higher learning in Oakland, California. Six members of the Roman Catholic Sisters of the Holy Names of Jesus and Mary founded it in 1868 as a school for girls. Originally called the Convent of Our Lady of the Sacred Heart, it became the Convent and College of the Holy Names in 1908. In 1955, the college began to admit men. Its name was changed to Holy Names College in 1971 and to Holy Names University in 2004. Holy Names athletic teams are called the Hawks.
