Sheffield, University of, is an institution of higher education in Sheffield, in the United Kingdom. The university was formed when three other institutions—the Sheffield Technical College, Firth College, and the Sheffield School of Medicine—merged. Sheffield School of Medicine was established in 1828. Firth College was created in 1879 as a result of the Cambridge University Extension Movement, a program devised to enable students in large towns and cities to profit from university teaching. Sheffield Technical School was established in 1884 to help train people to run Sheffield’s major industries.
During the 1890’s and early 1900’s, these three institutions were brought together to form the University College of Sheffield, and then the University of Sheffield. The university received its royal charter in 1905.
The university offers courses at both the graduate and postgraduate level in a wide range of subjects, including aerospace engineering, Japanese, and journalism. It has a strong reputation in such subjects as architecture, electronic engineering, and molecular biology.
