Witwatersrand, University of the, is an institution of higher education in Johannesburg, South Africa. The university originated from the South African School of Mines, which was established in Kimberley in 1896. It became the Transvaal Technical Institute in 1904, when it moved to Johannesburg, and the Transvaal University College in 1906. It was granted full university status, taking its current name, in 1922.
The university offers courses at both the undergraduate and postgraduate level. Its main campus is in Milner Park, Johannesburg. The university has a variety of museums, including the Adler Museum of Medicine, the C. E. Moss Herbarium, and a planetarium. It also has many attached research institutes.
