Liverpool, University of

Liverpool, University of, is an institution of higher education in Liverpool, England. It was founded in 1881 as a University College and received its royal charter in 1903. The distinctive color of the university’s Victoria Building gave rise to the term redbrick university, meaning those United Kingdom universities established in the 1800’s outside of London.

The University of Liverpool offers courses in a range of subjects at both undergraduate and postgraduate levels. The university is one of the few in England that offers Irish studies, Latin American studies, and M.B.A. degrees in the music and football (soccer) industries. The university library holdings include more than 250 incunabula (works printed before 1501) and a number of archive collections. The Liverpool School of Tropical Medicine is affiliated with the University of Liverpool. The university also has a marine laboratory on the Isle of Man.
