Queensland, University of, is an institution of higher education in Brisbane, the capital of Queensland, Australia. The university is the largest and oldest university in Queensland. It was established by an act of Queensland’s parliament in 1909 to commemorate the 50th anniversary of the state’s independence from New South Wales. The first classes were held in 1911.
The main campus is in the Brisbane suburb of St. Lucia, with other campuses in Herston, close to the center of Brisbane, and Gatton, 50 miles (80 kilometers) to the west. Other teaching facilities maintained by Queensland include Australia’s largest university marine station on the Great Barrier Reef; veterinary science and agricultural farms; an experimental mine; medical and dental schools in Brisbane; and a clinical school in North Queensland. The university focuses on research and teaching in such areas as medicine, global change, social science, bioengineering, and nanotechnology. Nanotechnology is the creation and study of structures slightly larger than atoms and molecules.
