Tasmania, University of

Tasmania, University of (UTAS), is an institution of higher education in the island state of Tasmania, Australia. The university was founded in Hobart, the state capital, in 1890 by Australian lawyer and politician Andrew Inglis Clark. He served as its vice chancellor, a high-ranking administrative officer, from 1901 to 1903. UTAS is one of Australia’s oldest universities. It ranks among the top universities in the world.

In 1991, the University of Tasmania merged with the Tasmania State Institute of Technology. The university offers an extensive range of degrees in traditional and specialized fields of study. The university also places emphasis on subjects and courses that relate to Tasmania itself, such as ocean and natural environment studies.

The university has campuses in Hobart, Launceston, and Burnie (Cradle Coast campus) in Tasmania itself. The school also operates campuses in Sydney, New South Wales.
