O’Neill, Susie (1973-…), was an Australian swimmer who won eight Olympic medals. At the 1992 Olympic Games in Barcelona, Spain, O’Neill won the bronze medal for the 200-meter butterfly event. At the 1996 Olympic Games in Atlanta, Georgia, in the United States, she won the 200-meter butterfly and was a member of the silver-winning 400-meter medley and bronze-winning 800-meter freestyle relay teams. At the 2000 Olympics in Sydney, Australia, O’Neill won the 200-meter freestyle event. She finished second in the 200-meter butterfly and was a member of the 400-meter medley and 800-meter freestyle relay teams that both finished second.
In addition to her Olympic performances, O’Neill won several medals at the Commonwealth Games and the FINA World Swimming Championships. FINA is the world governing body of the sport of swimming. O’Neill won one gold medal at the 1990 Commonwealth Games at Auckland, New Zealand, and three gold medals at the 1994 Commonwealth Games at Victoria, Canada. O’Neill also won six gold medals at the 1998 Commonwealth Games. In addition, she won a gold medal at the 1998 FINA World Swimming Championships.
In May 2000, O’Neill broke the oldest world record (19 years) in swimming, for the 200-meter butterfly, while qualifying for the Australian Olympic team. O’Neill announced her retirement from competitive swimming in 2000.
Susan O’Neill was born in Mackay, Queensland, Australia, on Aug. 2, 1973. In 2018, the Australian government made O’Neill a Member of the Order of Australia, an award for service to the country or humanity.
