Buckner, Simon Bolivar (1823-1914), was a lieutenant general in the Confederate Army during the American Civil War (1861-1865). He surrendered unconditionally to Union General Ulysses S. Grant at Fort Donelson in 1862.
Buckner was born on April 1, 1823, in Hart County, Kentucky. He graduated from the United States Military Academy in 1844 and fought in the Mexican War (1846-1848). In 1868, Buckner became editor of the Louisville Courier. He was governor of Kentucky from 1887 to 1891. He died on Jan. 8, 1914.
