Washington Commanders

Washington Commanders are a professional football team that plays in the National Football League (NFL). The team competes in the East Division of the National Football Conference. They play their home games at FedEx Field in Landover, Maryland, east of Washington, D.C.

The team began play in the National Football League in 1932 as the Boston Braves. The name was changed to the Redskins in 1933. The team moved from Boston to Washington in 1937. In 2020, the team temporarily changed its name to the Washington Football Team. The temporary name was changed to the Commanders in 2022.

Washington won NFL championships in 1937 and 1942. From 1946 to 1970, the team had only four winning seasons and did not make the playoffs. Washington was an NFL power throughout the 1980’s and early 1990’s, led by Joe Gibbs, the most successful head coach in the team’s history. Washington won Super Bowl XVII (played in 1983), Super Bowl XXII (played in 1988), and Super Bowl XXVI (played in 1992).

The team’s legends have included quarterback Sammy Baugh (1937-1952), cornerback Darrell Green (1983-2002), linebacker Chris Hanburger (1965-1978), offensive tackle Joe Jacoby (1981-1993), quarterback Sonny Jurgensen (1964-1974), wide receiver Art Monk (1980-1993), running back John Riggins (1976-1985), wide receiver Charley Taylor (1964-1977), and quarterback Joe Theismann (1974-1985). Recent stars have included linebacker London Fletcher, linebacker Ryan Kerrigan, wide receiver Santana Moss, and offensive tackle Trent Williams.
