Christian Science Monitor, The

Christian Science Monitor, The, is an American newspaper that covers both United States and international news. The newspaper is available online. It also prints a weekly edition in the United States and a weekly international edition, MonitorWorld, for readers outside the country. The Monitor‘s website is at http://www.csmonitor.com/.

The Monitor contains articles on the arts, business, current events, science, sports, and other topics. The First Church of Christ, Scientist, located in Boston, owns and operates the newspaper. Although the paper’s name and ownership suggest it is religious in nature, it contains only one religious article each day.

American religious leader Mary Baker Eddy founded The Christian Science Monitor in 1908. During the late 1800’s, Eddy had formulated new ideas about health and spirituality, and she established the religion known as Christian Science. In founding The Monitor, she desired to provide truthful reporting as a public service. Though Eddy was committed to supplying objective news, she insisted that the paper retain the words “Christian Science” in its title, and that it contain a daily religious article. Since its founding, the paper has won several Pulitzer Prizes, as well as various other awards.

For much of the paper’s history, it was a daily print newspaper. In March 2009, The Monitor began publishing a print edition only once a week and shifted its focus to its online publication.
