Berry, Halle, << BEHR ee, HAL ee >> (1968-…), is an American motion-picture star known for her beauty and her versatile acting. Berry won the 2001 Academy Award as best actress for her performance as the wife of a man sentenced to die in the tense drama Monster’s Ball. Berry was the first African American to win the Oscar as best actress.
Berry has appeared in a wide variety of films. They include the comedies Boomerang (1992), The Flintstones (1994), and B.A.P.S. (1997); the action movies The Last Boy Scout (1991) and Catwoman (2004); the dramas Losing Isaiah (1995), Things We Lost in the Fire (2007), and Frankie and Alice (2010); the political satire Bulworth (1998); the action film X-Men (2000) and its two sequels, X2: X-Men United (2003) and X-Men: The Last Stand (2006); the James Bond action movie Die Another Day (2002); the thrillers Gothika (2003), Perfect Stranger (2007), Dark Tide (2012), and The Call (2013); and the science-fiction film Cloud Atlas (2012). In 2014, Berry began acting in the science-fiction television series “Extant.”
Halle Maria Berry was born on Aug. 14, 1968, in Cleveland. In 1985, she won the Miss Teen Ohio beauty pageant. That same year, Berry was named Miss Teen All American. In 1986, she was runner-up to Miss USA. After working as a model, Berry got her first break in acting as a regular on the television comedy series “Living Dolls” in 1989. She also appeared in the hit TV dramatic series “Knots Landing” in 1991 and 1992. Berry made her film debut with an acclaimed performance as a narcotics addict in Jungle Fever (1991).
