Eddery, Pat (1952-2015), an Irish-born jockey, ranks among the greatest jockeys in horse-racing history. Eddery stands second among all-time winning jockeys in the United Kingdom with 4,632 winners. Only Sir Gordon Richards, with 4,870 winners, won more races. Eddery won 11 jockey championships in the United Kingdom, including four straight years from 1974 through 1977. He was also jockey champion in Ireland in 1982.
Patrick James John Eddery was born on March 18, 1952, in Dublin, Ireland. He began racing in 1966 and won his first race in 1969. Eddery was the champion apprentice jockey in the United Kingdom in 1971. He retired from racing after the 2003 season and established a stable of racehorses in 2005. Eddery died on Nov. 10, 2015.
