Louisiana System, University of

Louisiana System, University of, is a system of eight state-supported four-year educational institutions in Louisiana. The system consists of the following universities: Grambling State University, Louisiana Tech University, McNeese State University, Nicholls State University, Northwestern State University, Southeastern Louisiana University, the University of Louisiana at Lafayette, and the University of Louisiana at Monroe. The universities grant bachelor’s, master’s, and doctor’s degrees in a wide variety of subjects.

Grambling State University, founded in 1901 as a school for African American citizens of Louisiana, is in Grambling. Louisiana Tech University, founded in 1894, is in Ruston. McNeese State University, founded in 1939, is in Lake Charles. Nicholls State University, founded in 1948 as the Francis T. Nicholls Junior College of Louisiana State University, is in Thibodaux. Northwestern State University, founded in 1884 as the State Normal School, is in Natchitoches. Southeastern Louisiana University, founded in 1925, is in Hammond. The University of Louisiana at Lafayette, founded in 1898, is the largest school in the University of Louisiana system. The University of Louisiana at Monroe, founded in 1931 was called Northeast Louisiana University for most of its history.
