Hussain, Nasser (1968-…), a star British cricketer, served as captain of the English national team from 1999 to 2003. Under his leadership, England rose in the Test rankings, defeating Zimbabwe, the West Indies, Pakistan, and Sri Lanka. Hussain, an accomplished batsman and fielder, is a right-handed batsman and a leg-break bowler.
Hussain was born on March 28, 1968, in Madras (now Chennai), India. His father played for the city’s cricket club. Hussain and his family moved to England when he was 5 years old. In 1980, Hussain became the youngest batsman to represent Essex Under-15 Schools. He received the Cricket Writers’ Club Young Cricketer of the Year Award in 1989. He made his One Day International (ODI) debut against Pakistan in 1989 and was named to England’s national team in 1990, making his Test debut against the West Indies. The British government gave Hussain the Order of the British Empire, an award for public service, in 2002. Hussain announced his retirement from cricket in 2004.
