Weir, << weer, >> Mike (1970-…), became the first Canadian male golfer to win a major championship. The four “majors” in men’s golf are the Masters Tournament, the United States Open, the British Open, and the United States PGA (Professional Golfers’ Association) Championship. Weir won the 2003 Masters title in a play-off with the American golfer Len Mattiace. He was the first left-handed golfer to win the Masters.

Michael Richard Weir was born on May 12, 1970, in Sarnia, Ontario. As an amateur, he won the 1986 Canadian Juvenile Championship and the 1988 Ontario Junior Championship. Weir attended Brigham Young University in the United States, where he was an all-American golfer. He graduated in 1993.

Weir became a professional golfer in 1992. He qualified for the PGA tour in the United States in 1998 and won his first PGA tournament, the Air Canada Championship, in 1999.

Weir received the Lionel Conacher Award in 2000, given to Canada’s Male Athlete of the Year. He was the first golfer to receive the award since 1932. He also won the award in 2001 and 2003.
