FC Barcelona is a leading Spanish soccer club. FC stands for football club. Soccer is called football in Spain and many other countries. The club competes in La Liga, Spain’s highest soccer league. FC Barcelona (commonly known as Barça) plays its home games in Camp Nou stadium. The club is known for its passionate fans and has become a symbol for the region of Catalonia, which has its own language and culture. Barcelona is the capital of the region.

FC Barcelona has won numerous domestic trophies. The team has won 27 La Liga titles and the Copa del Rey (King’s Cup), Spain’s premier annual soccer tournament, 31 times. In international competition, it won the Union of European Football Associations (UEFA) Champions League in 1992, 2006, 2009, 2011, and 2015; the European Cup Winners’ Cup in 1979, 1982, 1989, and 1997; and the UEFA Super Cup in 1992, 1997, 2009, 2011, and 2015. In winning the UEFA Champions League in 2009, FC Barcelona became the first Spanish club to win that trophy, the La Liga title, and the Copa del Rey in the same year. The club repeated the feat in 2015. Barcelona also won the FIFA Club World Cup in 2009, 2011, and 2015. FIFA stands for Fédération Internationale de Football Association (International Federation of Association Football). FIFA is soccer’s world governing body.

Many international soccer stars have played for FC Barcelona. They have included Johan Cruyff of the Netherlands; Diego Maradona and Lionel Messi of Argentina; Neymar, Rivaldo, and Ronaldinho of Brazil; Hristo Stoichkov of Bulgaria; Xavi Hernández, Luis Suårez, and Andrés Iniesta of Spain; Sandor Kocsis of Hungary; Robert Lewandowski of Poland; and Luis Alberto Suárez of Uruguay. The club was established in 1899.
