Garnett, Kevin

Garnett, Kevin (1976-…), was a star forward in the National Basketball Association (NBA). During his 21-year career, Garnett was one of the most versatile players in NBA history. He became the only player in league history with 25,000 points, 10,000 rebounds, 5,000 assists, 1,500 steals, and 1,500 blocked shots. Garnett was also named to the All-Defensive first team 9 times from 1999 through 2011.

Garnett was named the NBA’s Most Valuable Player for the 2003-2004 regular season. In that season, he led the league in rebounding, averaging 13.9 a game, and finished tied for second in scoring with 24.2 points a game. Garnett also led the NBA in rebounding in 2004-2005 with 13.5 per game, in 2005-2006 with 12.7 per game, in 2006-2007 with 12.8 per game, and in 2012-2013 with 13.5 per game. He was voted the NBA Defensive Player of the Year for 2007-2008. Garnett was a member of the gold medal-winning United States team in the 2000 Summer Olympic Games and was Most Valuable Player of the 2003 NBA All-Star Game.

Garnett, who stands 6 feet 11 inches (211 centimeters) tall, played for the Minnesota Timberwolves from his entrance into the NBA until he was traded to the Boston Celtics in 2007. Garnett helped lead the Celtics to the NBA championship in 2008. He rejoined Minnesota after the 2014-2015 season. Garnett holds Minnesota career records in several categories, including total points, rebounding, blocked shots, and steals. In the 2003-2004 season, Garnett led the Timberwolves to the team’s first division championship in its history as well as its best regular-season record—58 victories and 24 defeats.

Garnett was born on May 19, 1976, in Mauldin, South Carolina. He did not attend college. The Timberwolves drafted him out of David Glasgow Farragut Career Academy, a public high school in Chicago, as the fifth selection in the first round of the 1995 NBA draft. Garnett retired after the 2015-2016 season. He was elected to the Naismith Memorial Basketball Hall of Fame in 2020.
