Bunton, Haydn, Sr.

Bunton, Haydn, Sr. (1911-1955), was one of the greatest Australian Rules football players. He was a master of disposing of the ball and played brilliantly in many positions, most notably as rover, but also as center and half forward flank. Bunton won the Brownlow Medal for the best and fairest player in 1931, 1932, and 1935. He also won the Sandover Medal of Western Australia in 1938, 1939, and 1941.

Bunton was born on July 5, 1911, in Albury, New South Wales, Australia. He died at the age of 44 on Sept. 5, 1955, from injuries suffered in an automobile accident four days earlier. He was inducted into the Australian Football League Hall of Fame in 1996. One of Bunton’s sons, Haydn Bunton, Jr., became an outstanding Australian Rules football player and coach.
