Kennedy Center Honors are awarded annually to men and women in recognition of their lifetime contributions to American culture through the performing arts. Honorees are nominated by an Artists Committee and selected by the trustees of the John F. Kennedy Center for the Performing Arts in Washington, D.C. The honorees come from the fields of dance, music, theater, opera, motion pictures, and television.
The Kennedy Center Honors was established in 1978 and has grown to become one of the cultural events of the year in the United States. The highlight is the annual Honors Gala at the Kennedy Center Opera House. Entertainment stars from throughout the world attend and perform at the gala to celebrate the honorees.
