Rooney, Wayne (1985-…), was an English soccer star. Soccer is called football in many countries. Rooney, a forward, scored his first goal in the Premier League in 2002 when he was only 16 years old. He first competed on an English national team when he was only 17. His reputation grew in 2004 when he scored four goals at the Euro 2004 international tournament. He was selected Player of the Year in England in 2008 and 2009.
Wayne Mark Rooney was born on Oct. 24, 1985, in Liverpool, England. He made his professional debut in 2002 with Liverpool’s Everton FC. FC stands for football club. Rooney signed with Manchester United FC in 2004, a widely publicized transaction that made him, at the age of 18, one of the highest-paid players in world soccer. In 2017, Rooney returned to play for Everton and announced his retirement from the English national team. He moved to D.C. United of Major League Soccer in the United States in 2018. In 2020, Rooney began playing for Derby County FC of the English Football League Championship, the second tier of professional soccer in the United Kingdom.
Rooney retired from playing soccer in 2021 to become the manager of Derby County FC. He resigned as Derby’s manager in 2022. Later that year, he returned to D.C. United to be the team’s head coach. In 2023, Rooney left D.C. United and became the manager of Birmingham City FC, an English soccer club. Birmingham City FC fired Rooney as manager in 2024. Later in 2024, Rooney became the manager of Plymouth Argyle, another English soccer club.
