Gordon, Bruce Scott

Gordon, Bruce Scott (1946-…), served as president and chief executive officer of the National Association for the Advancement of Colored People (NAACP) from 2005 to 2007. During that time, Gordon sought to increase the organization’s membership, improve its management practices, and strengthen its relations with people from all political backgrounds. Before he became head of the NAACP, Gordon was an executive in the telecommunications industry.

Gordon was born in Camden, New Jersey, on Feb. 15, 1946. He graduated from Gettysburg College in 1968. He later earned a master’s degree in management from the Massachusetts Institute of Technology (MIT) in 1988. Gordon began working at Bell of Pennsylvania in 1968. The company later became Bell Atlantic, and eventually Verizon Communications. Gordon held a variety of positions in the areas of sales, marketing, and consumer and business services. He was the president of Verizon’s retail markets group at the time of his retirement from the company in 2003.
