Casey, Robert Patrick, Jr. (1960-…), became a United States senator in 2007. Casey, a Democrat, represents Pennsylvania. Prior to his election to the Senate, Casey served as Pennsylvania’s state treasurer.
Casey was born on April 13, 1960, in Scranton, Pennsylvania. His father, Robert P. Casey, Sr., was a long-time politician who served as Pennsylvania’s governor from 1987 to 1995.
The younger Casey earned a bachelor’s degree from the College of the Holy Cross in 1982. From 1982 to 1983, Casey taught fifth grade and coached a basketball team in inner-city Philadelphia as part of a Roman Catholic volunteer program. He graduated with a law degree from the Catholic University of America in 1988. Casey worked as an attorney for a private law firm from 1991 to 1996.
In 1996, Casey was elected Pennsylvania’s state auditor general. He was reelected in 2000. Casey won election as state treasurer in 2004. In 2006, he campaigned for a seat in the U.S. Senate and defeated incumbent Republican Senator Richard J. Santorum. As a senator, Casey has served as chairman of the Joint Economic Committee. He also has focused on job creation, children’s health care, nutrition programs, and nuclear security issues. Casey was reelected in 2012 and 2018.
