Klobuchar, Amy (1960-…), became a United States senator in 2007. Klobuchar, a Democrat, represents Minnesota. Prior to her election to the Senate, Klobuchar served as the chief prosecuting attorney for Hennepin County, Minnesota. Hennepin County includes Minneapolis and many smaller communities.
Amy Jean Klobuchar was born in the Minneapolis suburb of Plymouth on May 25, 1960. She graduated from Yale University in 1982 with a bachelor’s degree in political science. She earned a law degree from the University of Chicago in 1985.
Klobuchar began working as an attorney for a private Minneapolis law firm in 1985. She became a partner in the firm before departing in 1993. Klobuchar worked as a partner in another private firm from 1993 until 1998, when she was elected Hennepin County attorney. She was reelected to the post in 2002.
In 2006, Klobuchar won election to the U.S. Senate. She was reelected in 2012 and 2018. As a senator, she supported the expansion of access to affordable health care and promoted measures to reduce U.S. dependence on foreign oil. Klobuchar has served on the Agriculture, Nutrition and Forestry Committee; the Commerce, Science, and Transportation Committee; the Judiciary Committee; and the Joint Economic Committee. She has published a memoir, The Senator Next Door (2015). In February 2019, Klobuchar announced that she would be seeking her party’s 2020 nomination for president. She campaigned for the nomination until she dropped out of the presidential race in March 2020.
