Baze, Russell

Baze, Russell (1958-…), a Canadian-born jockey, set the record for the most horse races won during a career. On Dec.1, 2006, Baze broke the previous record of 9,530 winners held by the Panamanian jockey Lafitt Pincay, Jr.

Baze has won at least 400 races in a year 12 times since 1992. No other jockey has won 400 races in a year more than three times. In 1995, Baze received a special Eclipse Award for becoming the first jockey to win 400 races four consecutive years. The Eclipse Awards honor American jockeys, trainers, and horse in Thoroughbred racing.

Baze was born on Aug. 7, 1958, in Vancouver, British Columbia, and grew up in the state of Washington. Joe Baze, his father, was a jockey and horse trainer. Russell won his first race in 1974. Baze was inducted into the National Museum of Racing and Hall of Fame in 1999.
