Buxton, Sir Fowell

Buxton, Sir Fowell (1786-1845), was a British social reformer concerned with slavery and prison life. In 1824, he became head of the antislavery group in the House of Commons. The group’s campaigning led, in 1833, to the act abolishing slavery in the British colonies. Later, Buxton worked to abolish slavery in Africa. Buxton also helped establish the Society for the Reformation of Prison Discipline.

Thomas Fowell Buxton was born on April 1, 1786, in Earl’s Colne, Essex, England. He died on Feb. 19, 1845.
