LeMieux, George

LeMieux, << luh MYOO >> , George (1969-…), served as a United States senator from September 2009 to January 2011. Florida Governor Charlie Crist named LeMieux, a Republican, to replace retiring Senator Mel Martinez. Prior to his Senate appointment, LeMieux had served as Crist’s chief of staff and as a lawyer in private practice.

LeMieux was born on May 21, 1969, in Fort Lauderdale, Florida. He received a bachelor’s degree from Emory University in 1991 and graduated with a law degree from Georgetown University in 1994. After graduation, LeMieux worked for a private law firm in Fort Lauderdale. In 2003, Crist became Florida attorney general and named LeMieux his deputy. In 2006, LeMieux was chief of staff for Crist’s successful campaign for governor. The following year, LeMieux worked as the governor’s chief of staff before returning to work at a private law firm.

In 2009, Senator Martinez announced that he would resign his seat once a successor was named. LeMieux held the seat until his successor, Marco Rubio, took office in January 2011.
