Miliband, Ed

Miliband, Ed (1969-…), led the United Kingdom’s Labour Party from 2010 to 2015. Miliband replaced Harriet Harman. Harman had served as acting Labour leader since the resignation of British Prime Minister Gordon Brown. Miliband resigned following Labour’s defeat in national elections in 2015. Harman resumed her temporary role until the election of Jeremy Corbyn as Labour leader in September.

Edward Samuel Miliband was born in London on Dec. 24, 1969. He was the second son of politically active Polish immigrants. Miliband attended the University of Oxford and the London School of Economics. Following a brief career in broadcast journalism, Miliband worked as a speechwriter and researcher for both Harriet Harman and Gordon Brown.

Miliband entered Parliament in May 2005 as the representative for Doncaster North in South Yorkshire. In June 2007, he joined his older brother, David, on the Cabinet of Brown’s newly elected Labour government. In September 2010, Miliband narrowly defeated his brother to win election as Labour leader. At 40 years old, he was the youngest party leader in Labour’s history.
