Pyeongchang

Pyeongchang is a small resort town in northeastern South Korea. The municipality of Pyeongchang has a population of 39,258. A municipality may include rural areas as well as the urban center. Pyeongchang lies in the Taebaek Mountains in Gangwon (also spelled Kangwon) Province. It is about 80 miles (130 kilometers) east of the South Korean capital, Seoul. The town’s name is sometimes spelled Pyongchang. It also sometimes appears as PyeongChang.

Pyeongchang is a popular center for outdoor winter sports. The area is home to numerous ski resorts. The annual Pyeongchang Trout Festival features ice fishing, sleighing, and other winter activities.

Pyeongchang hosted the 2018 Winter Olympic Games and the 2018 Winter Paralympic Games. In 2020, the International Olympic Committee chose the cities of Pyeongchang and Gangneung, both in Gangwon Province, to host the 2024 Winter Youth Olympic Games.
