Libra

Libra is a constellation known as the Scales. It is a constellation of the Southern Hemisphere. Libra is surrounded by several other constellations, including Hydra, Scorpius, and Virgo. It is best viewed from April through June. Libra was among the 48 constellations defined by the ancient Greek mathematician Ptolemy. Today, it is one of 88 constellations recognized by the International Astronomical Union (IAU), the leading authority in the naming of heavenly objects. Libra is also one of the 12 signs of the zodiac used in astrology (see Libra ).

Libra can be drawn in several ways using different numbers of stars. In one common configuration, Libra’s stars form a balance scale. A balance scale consists of a seesawlike beam with a pan or cup hanging from each end (see Balance ). Three of Libra’s stars form a triangle, representing the beam of the scale. Two lines of stars “hang” from its corners, representing the two hanging pans of the scale.

In Greek mythology, the Scales are held in the hand of a blindfolded goddess of justice. Images or statues of a goddess and the Scales can often be found in courthouses or other places associated with a legal or judicial system.
